There is a special historic bit of Florida right in the middle of the metropolitan areas of Pinellas County of Florida. In Largo, next to the Florida Botanical Garden, is Heritage Village. This village is a
group of restored buildings brought to the “village” from around Florida.
From the Heritage Village website:
“21-acre open-air living history museum located in the heart of Pinellas County. The natural pine and palmetto landscape is home to some of Pinellas County’s most historic buildings. More than 31 historic structures and features, some dating back to the 19th century, include a school, church, sponge warehouse, firehouse, railroad depot and store as well as a variety of historic homes.”
Most of the buildings have been filled with furnishings from the period. So there are many photo opportunities inside & out. During the summer they have many of the buildings closed but all are open during the winter tourist season.
There are always volunteers around to tell you about the history of the buildings. There are also placards with a brief description.
During the winter they often have volunteers in period costume demonstrating the work & the life of the day!
There is an education center and gift shop adjacent to the historic buildings. They have various events & festivals throughout the year so check their website for upcoming events.
If you are in the Tampa Bay area be sure to check out this very special and interesting Heritage Village!
That is all for now!
