Badlands, South Dakota

With my time in Colorado all finished up, I started my way back east today. As I make my way back home, I will be stopping at all the places where I was unsuccessful. First stop on that list, Badlands National Park in South Dakota. My first visit here, while exciting did not result in anything for the Milky Way. This time I’m hoping for better results.

Since I had a better lay of the land, I called ahead and made a reservation at the main camp ground. This helped put me at the best part of the park for sunset and photographing the Milky Way. I also booked two nights, hoping if one was a bust I would get another chance.

The day I arrived, it was perfect. The Badlands are pretty much dessert so it can get pretty hot there. But my first day was perfect with clear skies and agreeable temperatures. The second day would not go as well. It reached 104 degrees and stayed that way long after the sunset. While it didn’t rain it was extremely windy and very cloudy. The clouds made for a great sunset but kept me from shooting that night.

All in all it was good trip back to the Badlands. Be sure to stay tuned to find out how my first night of finally shooting the night sky in South Dakota went.

Thoughts from the road:

If at first you don’t succeed, try again and if you still fail try again or yell at the weather, like that will make a difference, it will make you feel better. ?
