April Showers Bring May Flowers2 min read time

Many people avoid rainy days when going out to photograph.  However, I found myself very excited to see a rainy day forecasted in April on a day that I planned to photograph

tulips.  As soon as I saw the forecast, I envisioned a couple of things I wanted to capture of the tulips in the rain.

Luckily, I packed in my camera bag, Kevin Adams’ Digital After Dark RainBreak.  This is a wonderful system that Kevin developed that attaches an umbrella to your tripod.  I found this to be incredibly helpful as it allowed me to work with my camera without struggling to hold an umbrella over my head.

The rain did not disappoint and came down most of the time during my three hours photographing.

One of the things I  wanted to capture was the colors of the tulips reflected in the pavement.

Adjusting my shutter speed according to the amount of rain that was falling was one of the challenges I faced while photographing that day.  Additionally, cars driving past would completely change the scene.

In my camera bag, I was happy to have a macro lens that I had not used in quite some time.  This lens had recently been sent off for repairs.  Once I started shooting with it, it felt like being reacquainted with an old friend.

I was absolutely thrilled when I got home and looked at what I captured in the rain.  I felt the images were so much better than they would have been if I had not been in the rain.

I was thankful I was able to witness these gorgeous spring flowers dancing in the rain!
